The new Husqvarna models TR 650 Terra and TR 650 Strada.

12.07.2012

Husqvarna Motorcycles – road bikes and off-road bikes with a long tradition.

Husqvarna Motorcycles is an international manufacturer of off-road and on-road motorbikes. It was originally founded in Sweden and has been part of the BMW Group since 2007. Since this time, the innovative technological capabilities of Husqvarna Motorcycles have been dynamically strengthened, and on a lasting basis, through its alliance with BMW Motorrad.

The motorcycle brand with the Scandinavian roots, based today in Cassinetta di Biandronno in the northern Italian province of Varese, boasts a tradition of motorcycle manufacturing which stretches back more than 100 years, making Husqvarnas the oldest motorcycles in the world with an uninterrupted production record. In ten decades of company history, Husqvarna Motorcycles has been able to achieve outstanding success in international off-road racing, with 82 World Championship titles to its name to date. In road racing, Husqvarna was successful in the 1920s and 1930s, so it was a logical step to set about expanding today's product range in the on-road arena once again.

Husqvarna re-entered the road bike segment in 2011 with the presentation of the Husqvarna Nuda 900 and Husqvarna Nuda 900 R models. These models, developed in collaboration with BMW Motorrad, likewise display Husqvarna's typical pure, athletic and dynamic styling. The brand most recently provided a look ahead to further extension of the model range with the Husqvarna Concept MOAB, Husqvarna Concept Strada and Husqvarna Concept BAJA studies.

With the new Husqvarna TR 650 Strada and TR 650 Terra, Husqvarna Motorcycles continues its model offensive that began last year with the successful launch of its road models.

Husqvarna TR 650 Strada and TR 650 Terra – two powerful characters for on-road and off-road riding.

With the new TR 650 Strada and the new TR 650 Terra,
Husqvarna Motorcycles extends its program of highly agile, dynamic single-cylinder motorcycles by adding two attractive new machines.

Their slim, wiry stature and masculine, dynamic design gives the new Husqvarna TR 650 models a progressive, light and energetic look, whether as the "Terra" version for light terrain or as the "Strada" version for asphalt-based motorcycling fun. At the same time, the two new Husqvarna models are clearly set apart from their competitors with their outstanding overall package of handling and riding dynamics as well as in terms of design. Along with their relatively low weight, a powerful single-cylinder engine and an agile, directionally-stable chassis they embody the passion of motorcycling and the fascinating world of Husqvarna Motorcycles.

Outstandingly powerful single-cylinder engine in the BMW Motorrad mould.

In terms of engine technology, the TR 650 Strada and TR 650 Terra rely on the tried and tested basis of the G 650 GS by BMW Motorrad. However, this liquid-cooled single-cylinder power unit with two overhead camshafts and
652 cc was extensively modified and its performance significantly enhanced for use in the two new Husqvarna models. It delivers 43 kW (58 hp) at
7,250 rpm, developing its maximum torque of 60 Nm at 5,750 rpm. For those countries with graduated licencing, there is also there is also a reduced power version on offer as an ex works option with 35 kW (48 hp) at 7,250 rpm and 54 Nm of torque at 5,750 rpm.

The single-cylinder engine has been modified with a wide range of measures to hone it for its athletic, dynamic purpose. In addition to various other improvements, such features as a modified electronic fuel-injection system, altered camshafts and an increased compression ratio due to modified piston and cylinder head geometries ensure powerful propulsion, high revving and spontaneous response. Nonetheless, with its exhaust system in stainless steel including two rear silencers and a closed-loop 3-way catalytic converter, the engine provides not just an especially high level of single-cylinder riding fun but also excellent fuel efficiency and environmental compatibility.

In conjunction with the constant-mesh 5-speed gearbox, the powerful and high-revving single-cylinder engine in the Husqvarna TR 650 Strada puts in an especially impressive performance on country roads, while a full torque curve and spontaneous response also allow supreme off-road excursions over light terrain on the TR 650 Terra.

Robust, high-quality chassis for riding fun both on and off the road.

The new Husqvarna models TR 650 Strada and TR 650 Terra are able to rely on an agile chassis based on a split-backbone tubular steel frame with remove-able rear frame and front beam bolted to the engine.

Front guidance and suspension duties are dealt with by a torsionally-stiff 46 millimetre upside-down telescopic fork. The rear wheel is controlled by a torsionally-stiff dual swing arm made of pentagonal steel tubing in conjunction with a centrally-mounted rear shock with progressive linkage. In keeping with its use on asphalted roads, the Husqvarna TR 650 Strada has cast wheels made of aluminium while the TR 650 Terra reflects its off-road suitability with a centrally-mounted rear shock with progressive linkage. Generous suspension travel of 190 millimetres at the front and rear makes for easy handling and a high level of directional stability combined with excellent comfort and off-road qualities.

TR 650 Strada fitted as standard with ABS. TR 650 Terra with ABS as an optional feature.

To match the dynamic performance available, the brake system consists of a single-disc brake at front and rear which offers supremely solid stopping power. The new Husqvarna TR 650 Strada is fitted as standard with ABS, while the new Husqvarna TR 650 Terra can likewise feature ABS if this is ordered as an ex works option. The ABS is disengageable for special uses.

Masculine shaping in dynamic, Italian design.

To reflect their high level of riding dynamics, the lines of the new Husqvarna TR 650 Strada and TR 650 Terra have been given a particular dynamic emphasis in terms of design. Although they embody masculine athleticism, their clearly-defined shaping nonetheless conveys a sense of agility and lightness. While the light-alloy cast wheels in the TR 650 Strada embody the active riding character of a road bike, the spoke wheels combined with a high fender on the front wheel reveal the dual sport ambitions of the TR 650 Terra.

The two new Husqvarna models have a robust, masculine appearance through selective use of black-coated chassis elements such as frame and swingarm. In addition, red side trim elements for the TR 650 Terra, and a black side panel for the TR 650 Strada, in combination with the Strada's low white front fender, lend a unique appearance to each.

The bikes' high aspirations in terms of riding dynamics are underscored by the light-gray sand-cast engine cases, providing a fascinating technical contrast in conjunction with the hallmark Husqvarna red cylinder head. Further accents are provided the anodized-silver upside-down forks and the end caps of the twin exhausts, which proudly exhibit the Husqvarna logo.

The new Husqvarna TR 650 Strada and TR 650 Terra are manufactured at the Husqvarna Motorcycles plant in Cassinetta di Biandronno, northern Italy.

Official: Nissan designers consult Blue Angels for inspiration, photo op [w/video]

Nissan Gains Inspiration from Unexpected Place

-The U.S. Navy Blue Angels give Nissan glimpse into fighter jet cockpit design for sports car development-

FRANKLIN, Tenn. - A team of designers and product planners from Nissan recently landed in Pensacola, Fla. to visit the United States Navy Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Squadron training facility. The objective of their mission was simple: find inspiration.

The Nissan personnel observed the Blue Angels squadron in action, and then met with both ground crew and pilots to explore ways of harnessing the command's speed and power for use in future automotive products. These Blue Angels team members were then given an opportunity to drive some of Nissan's performance products.

The Nissan team was also able to ask Blue Angels pilots about how they interact with their gauges and instruments in different situations to gather insight for the development of future vehicles. The Blue Angels pilots and ground crew also gave the Nissan team feedback on the exteriors, interiors and ride and handling of the Nissan vehicles on hand.

"We're always looking for inspiration beyond the auto industry in the design and development of our performance vehicles, and the Blue Angels have set the standard for high-speed excellence throughout their 66-year history. It was beneficial not only to study the designs of the 'Angels' F-18s up close but to get an understanding of how pilots and service personnel interact with their jets," said Jared Haslam, Senior Manager, Product Planning - Nissan Americas.

The Nissan personnel returned with a number of creative ideas and actionable items from both a design and product development standpoint. Many of these concepts will provide inspiration that will eventually be passed along to Nissan customers.

"We are thankful to the U.S. Navy and the Blue Angels for their overall service to the nation and for the professionalism, hospitality and inspiration given to the Nissan team on our recent visit," added Jared Haslam, Senior Manager, Product Planning - Nissan Americas.

Dynamic video and photos were also captured during Nissan's visit and can be viewed online at http://nissannews.com/en-US/nissan/usa/releases/flying-high-nissan-visits-elite-blue-angels-for-future-sports-car-innovation.

Rumormill: Optional track pack rumored for Porsche 918 Spyder

Porsche 918 Spyder Prototype

Autocar reports Porsche might have something special planned for the upcoming 918 Spyder: a Race Track package that strips unnecessary amenities in exchange for a lighter finished product. The report suggests the pack may even do away with paint in an effort to trim the hybrid supercar's curb weight by as much as 66 pounds, and that up to 20 percent of buyers may opt for the purist version.

Of course, in typical Porsche style, the automaker plans to attach a healthy price premium to the track package, proving once again that if your brand is strong enough, you can con customers into actually paying more for less product.

The 918 Spyder will bow with a 4.6-liter V8 paired with two electric motors good for up to 762 horsepower while tipping the scales at under 3,800 lbs.

red toyota mr2

Shopping trips become protracted. Friends and family call, wondering if you've been abducted. But it's a compulsion car enthusiasts can't help. Always on the lookout for interesting and exciting cars, any random parking lot can turn into a smorgasbord of "I haven't seen one of those in years!" You stand there taking smartphone pics of random old cars, confusing passers-by as you text and tweet your finds with a goofy smile on your face.

It's inescapable and unavoidable, so you might as well just celebrate the addiction. To that end, here are some of my most recent finds from a weekend shopping excursion. The cars stood out for a few different reasons, but mostly because they're increasingly rare.

When was the last time you saw a Ford Festiva that clean? Wouldn't you like to own that second-generation Toyota MR2? Check out that Acura Legend; elegant, mostly rust-free (surprisingly) and on its way to being a classic for a new generation. The capper, though, was the final-gen Toyota Cressida. Rare when it was new, it's even rarer now. What have you seen lately?

Need For Speed movie hits theaters Feb 7, 2014

Here we have the second interesting tidbit about the Need for Speed movie recently fast-tracked by Dreamworks studios, after finding out it would be helmed by stuntman and Act of Valor co-director Scott Waugh: it's slated for a February 7, 2014 release.

Hollywood generally reserves that month for dramas, so action films released then don't face a lot of competition within the genre. None of the Fast & Furious movies were released in February, and if you're wondering, the sixth film in that franchise is due Memorial Day weekend, 2013.

Dreamworks wants to give Need for Speed a chance to get its own air, but the studio's February-release track record is pretty bad, with bombs like I am Number Four, Euro Trip, and Norbit. (A notable exception? Old School.) NFS director Waugh probably likes February, though. After all, Act of Valor was released that month, and it's the film that got him the job.

2013 Aston Martin Vanquish

The 2013 Aston Martin Vanquish is a stunning, luxury, sports car, which uses the architecture and craftsmanship inherent in Aston Martin design and engineering, to produce a sports car which is more efficient and affordable for every day use.

While no details have been missed, new materials were used to make the car lighter, easier to handle, more efficient, and roomier. Performance has increased with the impressive technology used, and the overall look is reminiscent of past models, but much more economical to drive.

Design

The Vanquish is a leaner, more elegant car, with improved dynamics and agility. Its aluminum, magnesium alloy, and carbon fiber composite body, with body panels constructed from carbon fiber, increases torsion rigidity more than 25%.

Each carbon fiber panel is sculpted to direct airflow around the car, into the engine, also helping to cool the braking system. The carbon fiber elements used in the Vanquish are advanced techniques used in the motorsport and aerospace industries. Manipulating downforce of air, and making the car lighter, makes handling and grip of the car more responsive and predictable.

Performance

The front chassis is 13% lighter, by using hollow cast aluminum, and is redesigned to lower the engine, which also improves handling and agility. Because of the front-mid mounted engine, and mounting position of the transaxle, a near perfect distribution of weight is achieved.

The 6.0-liter, V12 engine has a revised block, and new head with variable valve timing. The fuel pump has been upgraded, with enlarged throttle bodies, and a revised intake manifold. It has fully machined combustion chambers, which helps the engine to provide an increased peak power of 565 hp at 6,750 rpm.

A Launch Control system, derived from motorsports, delivers an optimum take-off, which balances the throttle, gearbox, and traction aids. Dynamic Stability Control, and Positive Torque Control aids, helps in providing more control, for a refined driving experience.

The Adaptive Damping System (ADS) now gives the driver three damping options, delivering immediate adjustment of the car's handling abilities in normal mode, sport mode, or track mode. The Vanquish is capable of achieving 0-62 mph in just 4.1 seconds, with a top speed of 183 mph.

Interior

The interior space in the Vanquish has increased 1.5 inches for legroom, and 3.5 inches for elbow room, making it feel much roomier. The luxurious leather interior and hand-quilted seat bolsters, display the expert craftsmanship which is a signature of Aston Martin cars.

The Vanquish comes complete with a center stack, capacitive touch interface with haptic feedback, and Bang and Olufsen audio system, along with many other optional features offered in Aston Martin sports cars. The increased space is the newest renovation, with more cabin space, and an impressive 13 cubic feet for luggage in the trunk.

Exterior

Every effort has been made to make the 2012 Aston Martin Vanquish a sporty, luxury car, yet engineered in a way to make it more economical, with less emissions, roomier, and easier to handle.

Their efforts have paid off, and the 2013 Vanquish will begin to be delivered to customers in the United States, in early 2013. It is a beautiful looking sports car which has become more efficient, easier to handle, and more affordable to own.
